Volunteer Opportunities

• ASRT Foundation Board Trustee

  Charges

  The primary duties of a trustee are to provide strategic guidance and oversight of the programs and services administered by the ASRT Foundation, serve as an ambassador for the ASRT Foundation and assist with fundraising activities for the ASRT Foundation. Trustees should be willing and able to provide a meaningful financial contribution to the ASRT Foundation each year they serve as a trustee.

  Duties

  1. Determine the organization’s mission and vision through strategic planning.
  2. Provide proper financial oversight, which includes reviewing and approving annual budgets, periodic financial statements, investment policy, the audit and 990.
  3. Make a financial contribution to the Foundation at a personally significant level.
  4. Identify, attract and cultivate funding resources to ensure the financial viability of the Foundation and its programs.
  5. Ensure legal and ethical integrity and maintain accountability.
  6. Recruit new Board members and mentor new Board members as assigned by the chair.
  7. Appoint Foundation committee members and leadership.
  8. Review Foundation bylaws on a four-year cycle and make changes as necessary.
  9. Review and implement additional policies as needed.
  10. Determine, monitor and strengthen the organization’s programs and services, assess them against the strategic plan and mission, and recommend new programs when appropriate.
  11. Serve as an ex officio liaison to Foundation committees as appointed.

  Time Commitment:

  Trustees can expect to spend fewer than five hours per month answering emails, reviewing documents and working with ASRT Foundation staff.

  Travel Commitment

  Trustees are expected to attend all Board of Trustees meetings at the ASRT office. Trustees should expect to spend approximately six days per year traveling for the Foundation. These travel days occur during the week and on weekends. Attendance at Foundation special events throughout the year in conjunction with ASRT meetings is desired.

  Skills

  Trustees should be comfortable speaking and presenting to large groups, be knowledgeable of ASRT Foundation programs and services and able to build collaborative relationships.

  Criteria

  Board of Trustee appointees shall meet the following requirements:

  1. ASRT voting member
  2. Minimum of master’s degree, doctorate preferred
  3. Minimum experience of 5 years as a radiologic science or radiation therapy educator
  4. Prior grant recipient or first author of a peer-reviewed publication.
  5. Preference given for a history of volunteerism and involvement with the Foundation.

• International Speakers and Corporate Sponsored Programs Review Committee

  Charges

  Committee members read, evaluate and score applications for multiple ASRT Foundation programs according to established criteria. Members also may be asked to assist with assessment mechanisms and provide feedback on the applications, review and judging processes. At this time, committee members are responsible for reviewing applications for the following programs: International Speakers Exchange Award *Other Corporate Sponsored Programs ARRT Professional Education and Growth Scholarship Canon Safety First Grant * Corporate programs may change annually and will be updated accordingly.

  Duties

  1. Read, evaluate and score applications according to the established criteria of each program.
  2. Provide input about the application and assessment tools to the committee chair or staff on request.

  Time Commitment

  Committee members should expect to spend approximately 50 hours per year reviewing applications and contributing to other committee tasks. Committee meetings average approximately two hours per year.

  Travel Commitment

  There is no travel required to serve on the International Speakers and Corporate Sponsored Programs Review Committee.

  Skills

  It is preferred that committee members have prior national or international meeting presentation experience.

  Criteria

  1. Must hold active or retired ASRT membership status.

• Global Outreach Review Committee

  Charges

  Committee members contact outreach fellowship recipients to complete a post-trip summary. Members may also be asked to participate in story development and provide input about opportunities for program improvement.

  Duties

  1. Contact fellowship recipients as assigned by the chair to complete a post-trip summary.
  2. Participate in story development with ASRT staff when requested.
  3. Provide input to the Foundation chair and staff about opportunities for program improvement based on feedback when appropriate.

  Time Commitment

  Committee members should expect to spend approximately 20-40 hours per year contributing to committee tasks. Committee meetings are typically held 2-4 times per year via webinar or conference call.

  Travel Commitment

  There is no travel required to serve on the Global Outreach Review Committee.

  Skills

  1. It is preferred that GORC committee members have experience with humanitarian outreach project planning and participation.
  2. At a minimum, committee members should have experience traveling in countries of the developing world.

  Criteria

  1. Must hold active or retired ASRT membership status.

• Research and Grants Advisory Panel

  Charges

  Members of this committee evaluate research grant proposals throughout the year in order to make recommendations on funding to the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and provide valuable feedback to new and established researchers. Members may be asked to help develop a research agenda, grant application criteria and other research-related program materials as needed or provide advice to individuals who are interested in conducting research. Committee members are responsible for attending periodic meetings, typically held once per year via webinar.

  Duties

  1. Help develop the research agenda.
  2. Review grant application criteria and make suggestions for changes to the application as needed.
  3. Evaluate research proposals and make funding recommendations to the Board.

  Time Commitment

  Committee members should expect to spend approximately 40 hours per year reviewing applications and contributing to other committee tasks. Committee meetings average approximately two hours per year.

  Travel Commitment

  There is no travel required to serve on the Research and Grants Advisory Panel.

  Skills

  1. Ability to provide objective critique to applicants so they may improve their research skills.
  2. Ability to review grant applications objectively while maintaining a high standard of confidentiality and recuse themselves from review if they recognize a conflict of interest.

  Criteria

  1. Must hold an active or retired ASRT membership status for a minimum of two consecutive years prior to appointment.
  2. Must have had their writing published in a peer-reviewed medical journal as a first author, or have substantial experience with clinical research.

• Scholarship Review Committee

  Charges

  Members review all ASRT Foundation scholarship program applications and make recommendations for awards to the Foundation Board of Trustees. Members may also be asked to make recommendations to improve upon current scholarship applications and processes as needed.

  Duties

  1. Evaluate all scholarship applications and make suggestions for change.
  2. Review all eligible scholarship applications and make recommendations for awards.
  3. Identify outside funding support for new or existing scholarships as needed.

  Time Commitment:

  Committee members should expect to spend approximately 40-50 hours per year reviewing applications and contributing to other committee tasks. Committee meetings average approximately two hours per year.

  Travel Commitment

  There is no travel required to serve on this committee.

  Skills

  1. Maintain a thorough knowledge of academic assessment principles and be able to ascertain characteristics indicative of future success.
  2. Possess the ability to review scholarship applicants objectively while maintaining a high standard of confidentiality and recuse themselves from review if they recognize a conflict of interest.

  Criteria

  1. Must hold an active or retired ASRT membership status for a minimum of two consecutive years prior to appointment.
  2. Holds a minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
  3. Must be affiliated with or retired from an academic medical imaging or radiation therapy program as a program director, clinical coordinator or clinical instructor.

• Research Mentor Advisory Group

  Charges

  The main goal of the Research Mentor Advisory Group is to encourage and support the primary investigator towards writing a quality grant proposal, provide guidance on the process, and feedback on the grant proposal.

  Duties

  1. Be available and willing to share their knowledge and experiences.
  2. Help improve mentee research skills by sharing basic best practices.
  3. Provide guidance and constructive feedback on project improvement at specified time points based on work presented.
  4. Offer ideas and resources to improve weaknesses.
  5. Be responsive to requests for meetings requested by mentees.

  Time Commitment

  Committee members should expect to spend approximately 40 hours per year reviewing applications, consulting mentees on potential projects and contributing to other committee tasks. Committee meetings average approximately two hours per year.

  Travel Commitment

  There is no travel required to serve on the Research Mentor Advisory Group.

  Skills

  Ability to provide objective critique to applicants so they may improve their research skills.

  Criteria

  Committee members:

  1. Must hold an active or retired ASRT membership status for a minimum of two consecutive years prior to appointment.
  2. Shall be a past member of the Foundation Research and Grants Advisory Panel or a current or past member of a professional editorial review board.
  3. Must have been published as a first author in the Radiologic Technology or Radiation Therapist journal.
